William R. Monroe, RPT

I first began piano tuning and servicing in Bozeman, MT in 1999. In 2003 I moved my business to the Madison, WI area, subsequently relocating to Belleville, WI in December of 2005. I learned my trade studying the Randy Potter School of Piano Technology, and by working with other piano technicians.

As a Registered Piano Technician (RPT) member of the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG), I feel that continuing education is extremely important, and therefore continue to attend various professional seminars and conventions sponsored by the PTG. I also seek out educational opportunities outside of the PTG. Some of the more significant training events that I have been fortunate enough to attend include:

  • 2010: Steinway & Sons C.F. Theodore Steinway Technical Academy
  • 2008: Steinway & Sons C.F. Theodore Steinway Technical Academy
  • 2003: Yamaha Little Red Schoolhouse
  • 2002: Randy Potter Advanced Training Seminar

Grand piano restoration and rebuilding is my passion. Most frequently I find myself restoring and rebuilding Mason & Hamlin or Steinway & Sons grand pianos, though many other piano makes find their way in and out of my shop. In addition to Rebuilding and Restoration, I provide a complete range of services including piano tuning and repair, and piano related products for my private clientele, schools, churches and music studios. In my career I have also worked for piano dealers of all the major brands of pianos, including: Steinway & Sons, Yamaha, Kawai, Schimmel, Charles Walter, Boston, Essex, Young-Chang, and many others.

Ally Kurihara

I began my piano technology career as a student of Bill’s in 2020. At that time, I learned piano tuning and repair work in a mentor/apprentice type relationship with Bill. I continue to study piano technology so that I may refine and add to my skill set by continuing to spend time working in the piano shop with Bill. And, like him, I also am a member of the Piano Technicians Guild and take advantage of the educational opportunities the Guild provides. I believe that in the craft of piano technology, continuing education is key and being a part of the Guild helps ensure that I will continue to grow and advance as a piano technician.

I have been fortunate in my career to have had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings including schools, churches, music institutions, piano dealers, and performing venues. This variety of exposure has forced me to grow my skills quickly so that I can be responsive to a variety of different sets of needs.

I know the importance of piano maintenance because of my training as a piano technician. But I’ve also appreciated proper care and maintenance of pianos because of my experience as a piano teacher – which is something I continue to do with a select few students that I have grown close to over the years. Growing up around music and playing piano right from the beginning helped make it so that there were many aspects of piano technology that I was already familiar with.

I am thrilled to be working as part of a team with a piano technician who I have an established working relationship with, and whose skills and expertise I value deeply. I look forward to seeing you on my schedule.
